How I styled a Chanel-Inspired Tweed Dress

It is no secret that Chanel is known for its iconic Tweed pieces. Coco Chanel was known to borrow inspiration for her clothing for women from Menswear. In the case of her Tweed pieces (jackets, dresses, and skirts), she found the inspiration for using tweed in women’s fashion when she borrowed sportswear from her beau, the Duke of Westminster. Starting in 1924, Chanel used a Scottish factory to produce the iconic Tweed fabric at first, then in the 1930s, according to this brilliant article in Elle magazine, she began producing the fabrics in Northern France where she would combine her classic tweeds with wools, silks, cottons, and even cellophane to give them a more high fashion (and lighter weight) style. Now at the helm of the fashion house, Karl Lagerfeld continues to re-imagine the iconic tweed fabric blending trendsetting with longevity in true Chanel style (see pictures from the Fall/Winter 2017/2018 runway show below). Not surprisingly though, a Chanel Tweed piece will cost you a pretty penny, ranging from $3000 per piece to upwards of $12000 (Yikes!)

Do not despair, however, because, Karl Lagerfeld has his own eponymous label called Karl Lagerfeld Paris and it serves up Chanel-Inspired Tweed that is very budget friendly and also, quite surprisingly, curvy-body friendly (yes, they carry up to US Size 16). In this look, I am wearing a Navy colored sleeveless tweed dress that cost me $99 at Off Saks Fifth Avenue (you can also find this dress at the label’s website here and in their stores). I styled it with a BCBG chiffon tie-neck blouse, a Gucci-inspired bow-tie crystal-studded brooch, Wolford tights, a Chanel Classic Flap bag and Nine West Pumps.  Here are some of the Tweed dresses by Karl Lagerfeld (including the style I wore in this look) ranging in price from $109-$148 (click here to buy).
